Flying High Together

Reading & Phonics

We are a reading school and reading development is at the heart of our practice. No child should leave school not being able to read, this is the commitment we have made to our children.

We follow the Read, Write, Inc. programme for teaching phonics and early reading. This works very successfully for our children and they achieve highly in the Year One phonics screening check. Last year 93% of our pupils passed the phonics screening check.

We work closely with the Jerry Clay English hub and the Ruth Miskin RWI team receive regular high-quality training which ensures our teaching of reading and phonics is the best it can be. Mrs Edwards works for the English Hub in her role as an auditor. She visits other schools to help them evaluate their phonics and reading offer.

Phase 1 Letters and Sounds is taught daily in Nursery. Read, Write, Inc. is taught daily in Reception until the children have completed the programme in Year 2. When the programme is completed, Year 2 children are taught spelling, punctuation and grammar.

Need more help or support? Take a look at these short videos developed by RWI to support parents in helping their child read at home, these cover many aspects including how to say the sounds and use the blending books.

The school gives high priority to reading, our children are exposed to a range of quality texts and there are areas around school where children are encouraged to enjoy reading for pleasure. All children take home a library book weekly. When children are able to blend they also take home a phonically decodable book that matches their Read, Write, Inc. band. Once a child has completed the Read, Write, Inc. programme, they select a book from the appropriate book band. All children read during Read, Write, Inc. sessions and are heard read by a member of staff.

In Year 2 children have taught reading fluency sessions three times a week and reading comprehension sessions twice a week. Children work on a text where the content is familiar to them e.g. linked to prior learning. They apply the RWI partner principles to read the text together taking turns. During these sessions, teachers introduce and clarify new vocabulary and explore the features of texts under the visualiser.

Quality story sessions are timetabled in daily and there is an emphasis on developing a love of books, vocabulary and understanding through our magic of stories approach.
