Reading at Home

Reading is an important life skill and practising reading regularly at home can really help young children become confident and fluent readers. Just like learning to ride a bike, practise makes perfect!

We have developed a couple of short videos that you can watch that will help you support your child with their reading. It covers the reading routine, the book and how to use this and how to record reading in your child’s reading record book. Remember if your child reads 3 times a week at home, they are entered into our reading champion prize draw to win a brand-new book!

Sound blending books

This short video from RWI will show you how to use the sound blending book at home with your child. You will just need to write in your child’s reading record book once you have read together so school can praise your child for their efforts.

Book bag books

This short video shows our school reading system and how to read the book bag books at home with your child. This includes using the red word bookmark, the reading routine, introducing words and vocabulary included in the book cover and recording reading in the reading record. This is the same process for all the book colours from red to grey.
