Dear parents and carers,
I cannot believe I am writing to you with our summer term diary dates…where is this year going! I am very much looking forward to working with you all over the summer months and watching your child grow and flourish.
Diary dates: I have attached to this letter the school diary dates for the remainder of this year. Hopefully this will help you organise your calendar and join us for some of our events. Please keep it safe and perhaps pop a copy on your fridge or take a photo on your phone! Year 2 parents have an additional letter with all the transition activities myself and Mr Potter have arranged over the summer to support our children in having a strong start to junior school. These dates are also on the main school calendar.
PE sessions: PE sessions this half term are as follows.
- Reception – Tennis – Thursday and Friday
- Year 1 – Gymnastics- Tuesday and Wednesday
- Year 2 – Netball – Monday and Friday
Please can children come in PE kit on these days, no crop tops etc. Children will need blue/black shorts, white T shirt and a blue/black jumper or hoodie. Fairway graphics, our uniform supplier, sells PE kit with the school logo through their website https://www.fairwaygraphics.co.uk/commonroad

Supermarket alternatives such as Tesco are cheaper and we are more than happy for children to wear these alternatives. There is no need to buy uniform with a logo.
Baby news…
As you are aware we are having a baby boom here at Common Road. So far this year we have welcomed 3 baby boys! Miss Kolka welcomed Bartley-Blue in December, Miss Adams welcomed her first baby Roman in February and Miss Mitchell welcomed Remi in March. We are waiting for Mrs Blakeborough’s first baby to arrive now, followed by Miss Shaw’s in June. Miss Atkinson and Miss Lawson will be teaching in turtles class and Miss Hewitt will be teaching giraffes class for the remainder of this academic year.
Reception and nursery places
We have some places available for September for Reception and Nursery. If you would like a reception place please contact admissions at https://www.wakefield.gov.uk/schools-and-education/schools/school-admissions/
We have a range of offers for nursery places this includes 30 hours, 15 hours (over morning or afternoons) condensed hours where 15 hours can be used over 2.5 days. We are also able to take Rising 3’s now where children can start the term they turn 3 this means they can start with us from 2. If you would like a nursery place please telephone the school office, email office@commonroad.wakefield.sch.uk or call in for an application form. Mrs Mock or Mrs Pick will be more than happy to help you fill in the forms if you need support.
Prams and buggies
We are seeing an increasing number of reception and nursery children being dropped and collected at school in pushchairs and buggies. There are a number of reasons we ask parents not to bring children in pushchairs. The main reason is that children at this age need to develop their muscle strength and the more opportunity children have to do this the more opportunity they will have to meet their developmental milestones. Alongside this the school site has small paths and buggies and pushchairs make drop offs and pick ups difficult for families on foot. Finally we are also being asked to store the buggies. Unfortunately there is not room in school to store these safely without taking up teaching and learning spaces and presenting as a health and safety hazard. Please can I ask that children are walked into school and collected on foot please. Thank you in advance for working with us to ensure children can enjoy playing and learning and meet their developmental milestones.
Just a reminder school will be closed Monday 4th May for national Bank Holidays and Thursday 7th May for Polling. Monday 1st June for teacher training. School closes for the summer break Friday 19th July 2026 and returns Wednesday 2nd September 2026
