Newsletter 29th April 2025

Dear parents and carers,

I hope you all enjoyed the Easter break and the Easter bunny managed to visit the children in your house. Posey and I managed a lovely holiday abroad with our friends both young and old which we both enjoyed very much.

Thank you for all your support in our Easter activities. Miss Adams and the school parliament will draw the bunny hunt shortly and announce the winners!

Diary dates: I have attached to this letter the school diary dates for the remainder of this year. Hopefully this will help you organise your calendar and join us for some of our events. Please keep it safe and perhaps pop a copy on your fridge or take a photo on your phone!

I met with Mr Potter, Headteacher at South Kirkby Academy, last week to discuss the Year 2 children’s transition to South Kirkby Academy so these are included on our diary dates. Reminders as always will be sent on Dojo or by text message. Remember to check out the school Twitter and Facebook pages to see what the children have been up to.

Year 1 phonics screening checks: Just a reminder the Year 1 children will complete the statutory Year 1 phonics screening check the week commencing 9th June. It is incredibly important that children arrive at school on time every day. When children are late they miss their RWI session which is one of the most important reading lessons of the day.

On the week of the check we need all children in school everyday, on time. Breakfast is extremely important and helps with concentration, if you have any difficulties providing breakfast at home please let us know and we can support in a number of different ways. Children who are absent this week are marked as so, and this information is submitted to the Department for Education. The results of the check will be shared in your child’s school report.

School and nursery places: We have a small number of school places available for September for Reception, Y1 and Y2. If you have friends or family moving to the area or who are looking for a new school then why not recommend Common Road? Please contact Wakefield admissions through the Council website or alternatively call 01924 306052 or email admissions@wakefield.gov.uk You can also call the school office for advice on 01977 651918.

In nursery we have places available from September. We offer 30 hours, 15 hours and flexible hours and we are now taking Rising 3’s. This means children can join our school at the start of the term in which they turn 3 rather than the term after they turn 3. We have a fabulous nursery team with our Early Years lead and teacher Miss Perry as teacher in charge and Mrs Oxley and Mrs Tonks our experienced EYFS support staff supporting the children. Our nursery provides an outstanding start to children’s education. For further information please contact the school office 01977 651918 or email office@commonroad.wakefield.sch.uk

Just a reminder school will be closed Thursday 8th May as school had to be reserved incase a polling station was required and Monday 5th May for national Bank Holidays. School closes for the summer break Friday 18th July 2025 and returns Wednesday 3rd September 2025

I am looking forward to another fabulous term here at Common Road.

Yours sincerely,
Mrs Edwards – Headteacher
